Due to concerns about my elevated intraocular pressures and evidence of early cataracts my optician recommended that I made an
appointment with Mr Sajid Khan, a consultant ophthalmologist, at North Downs Hospital, which I duly did.
I should at this point
explain that I am 70 years old and as a result of a spinal injury that occurred earlier in my life, I am paralysed and confined to a
wheelchair.
In addition, some years ago, I was diagnosed as having Parkinson’s. As a result, my circumstances are a little more
complicated than most and present a challenge to most medical practitioners, when I require treatment of any kind.
Over a period of
several weeks, I made a number of visits to North Downs Hospital and my wife and I found all the staff that we came across very
friendly, welcoming , kind and helpful.
This started with the receptionists and included all the nursing staff, the catering staff,
the porter, the theatre staff and my incredible surgeon, Mr Khan.
During all my visits to Mr Khan, he could not have been more kind
and considerate and made every effort to make sure that I was properly tested with all the equipment to ensure his diagnosis was
correct. He had to take significantly more time and effort to carry out all the tests because of my circumstances, but at all times put
me at my ease and never made me feel uncomfortable about the situation.
He agreed with my optician’s findings and after going to
great pains to discuss the options that were available to me, I decided to take the option of cataract surgery, which he explained would
both improve the brightness and clarity of my vision, potentially reduce my overall dependency on spectacles, but also open up the
drainage channels and eliminate the risk of acute angle closure glaucoma.
When it came to the time of the operation, I presented a
number of problems to Mr Khan’s medical team because of the complications of getting me from my wheelchair onto an appropriate
operating chair/bed from where the procedure could take place without my incurring problems as a result of my condition.
This was
done with great patience, kindness and consideration for my comfort by all the staff involved.
The efforts that were made by Mr Khan
and his team, for the procedures on both eyes, which occurred on different days, to get me comfortably into the appropriate operating
chair/bed and positioned in the right place for the operation, was extraordinary .
During the procedures I was regularly asked by mr
Khan and his team about my comfort and also whether anything needed to be changed. He made it very clear that the procedure could be
paused should I get uncomfortable and I could be repositioned if necessary. Fortunately, there was no requirement to do this.
The
procedures were successful and I cannot praise Mr Khan and his team highly enough. I have had to attend many hospitals and seen many
consultants for different reasons over the 50 years that I have been confined to a wheelchair. Mr Khan is without doubt the best doctor
that I have come across in all my experience and I would not hesitate to recommend him.
With regard to the North Downs Hospital in
general; we found it well run, very clean, efficient and had a pleasant atmosphere, which came from all the staff we came across.
We
are both extremely grateful for everything that was done for us while we were there.
It is one of the best hospitals we have ever
been to.
